Sport Media, B.A.

The Sport Media program at York College of Pennsylvania is unique because of its wide-ranging course content and interdisciplinary design. Sport media is a growing field, and sport organizations have placed an increased focus on communication specialization skills (e.g., branding, content generation, film editing). In light of this, students in the Sport Media program will experience a comprehensive sport management and mass communication or integrated marketing curriculum, reflective of the breadth of the sport media industry, and also have the opportunity to gain specialized expertise through specific tracks that will help prepare them for positions in the various segments of sport communication and media. These tracks include: Integrated Marketing Communication, Sport Communication Performance, and Sport Communication Production.

Mission of the Sport Media Major

The mission of the York College Sport Media major is to provide students with a positive environment, rich in academic and practical experiences, oriented toward developing comprehensive professional and technical skills that are applicable to the diverse career opportunities in sport communication.

Sport Media Program Goals

  • Explain contemporary issues in sport media and craft best practice responses in an ethical manner.
  • Apply evidence-based management practices to foster safe and productive sport media organizations.
  • Apply communication knowledge, skills and abilities in sports broadcasting, production, performance, directing, engineering, and program planning evaluation
    OR (depending on selected track).
  • Students will develop, research, and execute IMC creative strategies and tactics, including digital and social media executions, advertising, promotions, and public relations initiatives relative to sport broadcasting, production, and performance.
  • Communicate effectively to specific audiences and within specific contexts.

Requirements for graduation:

To be eligible for graduation, students majoring in Sport Media must complete a minimum of 120-124 credits, achieve a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher, satisfy the College’s residency requirements, and satisfactorily complete the General Education Requirements of the College. Courses used to complete General Education Requirements may not be taken on a pass/fail basis. 

The General Education Requirements of the college require students to successfully complete First Year Seminar, Foundations (FCO 103 will be a required co-requisite with FCO 105 for students who have a high school GPA below 3.20), Disciplinary Perspectives, and a Constellation. Students who enter the college with 30 credit hours completed will not take a First Year Seminar course and therefore must take an additional 3 credits for graduation. Transfer students that are awarded 60 or more credits upon acceptance to York College will not be required to complete a Constellation.

The Constellation requirement is met when a student completes four courses from a minimum of three disciplines within the Constellation requirements.  Transfer students that are awarded 60 or more credits upon acceptance to York College will not be required to complete a Constellation except for Education majors.
