Degree programs within the Kinsley School are designed to provide a rigorous academic component coupled with real-world, hands-on experience. These degrees prepare students for careers in industry, government, the medical sector, as well as graduate and professional schools. Students who pursue a major in the School will gain the analytical skills and knowledge required to succeed in today’s highly technical and globally-connected world.
The Engineering and Computer Science programs are housed in two buildings–the Kinsley Engineering Center and the Civil Engineering Center. These buildings, encompassing over 60,000 square feet of space, were designed to foster interactions and cross-disciplinary projects among the majors. The Kinsley Engineering Center is a student-oriented facility containing state-of-the-art laboratories and a large common area where students can go to study, interact, work on collaborative projects or just relax. The computer, electrical, and mechanical engineering programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET and the computer science program is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, www.abet.org.
The Biological Sciences program is housed in the Appell Life Sciences Building and the Naylor Ecological which features multiple laboratory and research spaces, including a tissue culture suite, microscopy lab, walk-in cold room, aquatics lab, and a multi-room climate controlled greenhouse. Chemistry and Forensic Chemistry programs are in Campbell Hall where you will find several teaching labs, dedicated space for independent study, a crime scene lab, and a $1.5 million instrumentation facility. All of our laboratories are adjacent to faculty offices so that students can work under supervision outside of class time.
Students who are interested in medical or other health-related professional schools can be designated as Pre-Med. These students typically major in biology or chemistry and are advised by the Committee for the Health Professions of the College. A well-rounded education combining science and non-science courses is the preference of medical schools as opposed to any particular major. The Pre-Medical Scholars/Hershey Medical School Early Admission Program is available for exceptionally accomplished high school seniors who maintain high scholarly achievement in college and show a continuing commitment to medicine. York College, York Hospital and, the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine at the Hershey Medical Center cooperatively offer this special early admissions program.
The Chincoteague Bay Field Station at Wallops Island, Virginia offers a series of undergraduate and graduate courses in marine and environmental sciences. Courses taken at the Field Station may be transferable to the College for degree credits. With prior departmental approval, Biology majors may utilize one course as an upper-division elective toward their degree requirements. Additional information is available in the Biological Sciences office and at the Field Station’s website, www.cbfieldstation.org.
