Medical Humanities Minor

Medical Humanities is an interdisciplinary field that brings the tools of analysis and inspection from the humanities to the subject of medical science. A student of medical humanities should have a good base knowledge in both science and humanities. Medical Humanities programs are increasingly preparing students for an array of roles in government, the healthcare industry (including marketing, sales, medical research, consulting, and insurance), civic engagement, and administration in the private and public sectors.

Required Courses (18-19 credits):

HUM 310 Medical Humanities 3 credit hours

Choose 3-4 credit hours from the following courses:

BIO 142 Molecules, Genes and Cells 4 credit hours
OR
BIO 150 Introduction to Molecular Biology 4 credit hours
BIO 151 Introduction to Molecular Biology Lab 0 credit hours
CHM 134 General Chemistry I 4 credit hours
CHM 135 General Chemistry I Lab 0 credit hours
PHY 110 General Physics I 4 credit hours
PHY 111 General Physics I Lab 0 credit hours
PSY 210 Fundamentals of Biopsychology 3 credit hours

Choose 6 credit hours from the following courses:

HIS 370 History of Alcohol and Drugs in American Life 3 credit hours
HIS 402 The Black Death 3 credit hours
NUR 200 Women’s Health 3 credit hours
PHL 225 Philosophy of Medicine 3 credit hours
PHL 346 Bioethics 3 credit hours
PS 357 Health Law and Policy 3 credit hours
WRT 352 Rhetoric of Science 3 credit hours
Six additional credit hours, taken from either group
Only one course from the grouping, BIO 142 OR BIO 150 and BIO 151 can be targeted towards the minor.
Students majoring in Medical Humanities are prohibited from declaring the minor.
