Radiography, B.S.

A degree in Radiography will prepare the student for a professional career as a radiographer. Radiographers are health care providers who use ionizing radiation to produce quality diagnostic images. There are many general staff radiography employment opportunities, as well as advanced positions based on education and training. Employment and specialization includes: hospitals, outpatient settings, educational and administrative positions. Upon successful completion of the program and the ARRT Registry Examination** for Radiography, the individual is certified as a radiographer.

Applicants to the Radiography program must be eligible for admission to the College, as well as, have earned a minimum 2.0 average in high school biology, chemistry, and algebra.  A score of 1050 or higher is required on the SAT with a minimum of 450 on each section of the critical reading and math components.  Transfer students will be considered for admission to the Program on an individual basis if there are clinical spots available in the cohort of students, as the class size is limited.

Students pursuing the Bachelor of Science degree in Radiography spend two years at York College of Pennsylvania followed by two clinical years at a JRCERT accredited hospital-based Radiography program. Admission to York College of Pennsylvania does not guarantee admission to the hospital clinical rotations. During the first two years of study, students follow the prescribed courses of study the College. During this time, the student must earn a minimum of 2.0 in each of the required courses and a cumulative grade point average of 2.5. A GPA of 3.0 or higher recommended, in order to be competitive when applying for clinical. At the end of the fall semester of the sophomore year, the student applies for the clinical years through application one of the affiliated Radiography Programs. The clinical program decides which students will be accepted into clinical years based on the following criteria:

• Overall GPA (3.0 or higher is recommended)
• Letters of recommendation
• Interview
• College affiliation

In addition, all General Education Requirements and all required courses for the major (except RAD 310-440) must be completed prior to the start of the clinical rotations. Students are not able to complete courses at the College after their clinical rotations are complete.

York College maintains affiliations with the following hospital-based Radiography programs:

• Johns Hopkins School of Medical Imaging
• WellSpan York Hospital Radiography Program

It is a commend trend in healthcare that employees will not be allowed to use tobacco and must remain tobacco free. Since the applicants to this program work within the guidelines of various healthcare facilities, applicants must be aware of the requirement to be “tobacco-free”. These guidelines are determined by the clinical site, not the College, and the student will be expected to follow these guidelines to be successful in their clinical rotation.

Most clinical facilities require employees and students within the facility to be fully immunized. Lack of vaccination may affect the ability to complete this major.

Upon complete of the clinical rotations, a maximum of 59 credits will be awarded towards the bachelor’s degree. Graduates must receive their bachelor’s degree before being eligible to sit for the national registry exam**. The clinical years begin in August and continue for five consecutive semesters, including the summer of the junior year. A course average of 85% in each of the clinical courses is required to remain in the clinical rotation. Failure to do so will result in dismissal from the clinical rotation by the clinical program.

**American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)

Requirements for Graduation:

To be eligible for graduation, students majoring in Radiography must complete a minimum of 131 credits, achieve a cumulative grade point average of 2.0, satisfy the College’s residency requirements, and complete the General Education Requirements of the College. A minimum grade of 2.0 is required for First Year Seminar and all courses taken as part of Foundations (FCO 103 will be a required co-requisite with FCO 105 for students who have a high school GPA below 3.20). Courses used to complete General Education Requirements may not be taken on a pass/fail basis. In addition, students majoring in Radiography must earn a minimum grade of 2.0 in all major requirements with an overall cumulative GPA over 2.5 or higher required. The College cannot guarantee the student a position at a hospital for the clinical years.
