The Human Services major at York College is a career-oriented degree in which students develop the skills and knowledge needed to help facilitate positive change for individuals, families and communities. Human Services is one of the fastest-growing professions. The major requirements prepare students to immediately work in a multitude of settings – hospitals, group homes, schools, court systems, retirement communities, employment agencies, rehabilitation centers, and correctional facilities – with a variety of clients including children, youth, older adults, individuals with disabilities, and more. The Human Services major also prepares students to enter into graduate programs, including those in Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Marriage and Family Therapy, Counseling and Gerontology.
The Human Services faculty assist students in personalizing the program to fit their interests in areas including criminal justice, youth development, not-for-profit management, or gerontology. Students benefit from small classes and individualized attention from faculty. Human Service students gain valuable, hands on experience throughout the program including internships and community-based research projects with faculty.
Requirements for Graduation:
To be eligible for graduation, students majoring in Human Services must complete a minimum of 120 credits, achieve a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher, satisfy the College’s residency requirements, and complete the General Education Requirements of the College. A minimum grade of 2.0 is required for First Year Seminar and all courses taken as part of Foundations. Courses used to complete General Education Requirements may not be taken on a pass/fail basis.
The General Education Requirements of the college require students to successfully complete First Year Seminar, Foundations, Disciplinary Perspectives, and a Constellation. Students who enter the college with 30 credit hours completed will not take a First Year Seminar course and therefore must take an additional 3 credits for graduation. Transfer students that are awarded 60 or more credits upon acceptance to York College will not be required to complete a Constellation.
