Communication

Nearly everyone is born with the physical ability to talk, but effective speaking and communication must be learned. As an academic field, communication relates to all of the ways we communicate, encompassing the study of theories and skills that comprise the contexts of intrapersonal, interpersonal, small group, public and mass communication.

Students in our Mass Communication major are exposed to the theoretical principles and pragmatic skills necessary for a career in the media. Exposure to audio, radio and video production, news gathering and reporting, copy writing, announcing, and field and control room equipment operation provides students with a strong foundation for broadcasting related careers, work in independent production houses, or work with corporate video production. Upon graduation, students are well-qualified in both the technical skills of their chosen major and the practical skills of effective communication in a professional and personal setting.

Our Public Relations major provides a thorough background in the theoretical principles and the practical application of public relations. Coursework includes broad-based instruction in a variety of communication strategies and tactics to meet objectives for corporate, government, public relations firms and not-for-profit organizations. Upon graduation, students possess technical skills for their major and the practical skills of effective communication in both professional and personal settings. Additionally, students gain essential foundations in communication.
