The Department of Biological Sciences offers baccalaureate degree programs in Biology, Secondary Education-Biology, and the Allied Health fields of Nuclear Medicine Technology, Radiography, and Respiratory Care.

  • The Biological Sciences major offers exciting and challenging opportunities in the study of molecular and organismal biology, in the lab and in the field, using advances technologies and hands-on experience.  The Biology program is broad-based, and designed to prepare students for graduate studies or for professional programs in a variety of fields, including medicine or other health-related careers. Graduates may seek employment immediately in biology-related areas such as environmental science or biotechnology.
  • York College offers a number of programs for students interested in the Allied Health fields, and these majors are offered through different departments of the College. All these programs provide students with the training to obtain employment in their respective medical fields immediately upon graduation or, in some cases, following their completion of certification examinations required in certain specialties. Four-year baccalaureate programs include Nuclear Medicine Technology, Radiography, and Respiratory Care in the Biological Sciences Department, and Medical Laboratory Science in the Physical Sciences Department. The Allied Health programs are professionally accredited, and prepare students for careers as nuclear medicine technologists, medical laboratory scientists, radiographers or respiratory therapists.
  • Pre-medical Studies prepares students for a variety of medical and other health-related professional schools.  Pre-medical students typically major in biology or chemistry and are advised by the Committee for the Health Professions of the College.  A well-rounded education combining science and non-science courses is the preference of medical schools as opposed to any particular major.  The Pre-Medical Scholars/Hershey Medical School Early Admission Program is available for exceptionally accomplished high school seniors who maintain high scholarly achievement in college and show a continuing commitment to medicine.  York College, York Hospital and the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine at the Hershey Medical Center cooperatively offer this special early admissions program.
  • The Chincoteague Bay Field Station at Wallops Island, Virginia offers a series of undergraduate and graduate courses in marine and environmental sciences.  Courses taken at the Field Station may be transferable to the College for degree credits.  With prior departmental approval, Biology majors may utilize one course as an upper-division elective toward their degree requirements.  Additional information is available in the Biology Department office and at the Field Station’s website, www.cbfieldstation.org.
