ECH 215 Teaching PreK & K: Exploring Foundational Mathematical Concepts and InstructionFall/Spring
This course focuses on understanding the foundational mathematical concepts learned in the primary years, focusing on the concept of numeracy and also addressing spatial awareness, shapes, measurement, and early algebraic thinking. In working with these concepts, students will apply mathematical practices, including problem solving, critical judgment, and sense-making related to applied contexts. Additionally, instructional and management strategies will be examined in order to create a positive classroom environment in which to effectively elicit children’s mathematical thinking and promote mathematical discourse. Through inquiry, exploration, and activity, students will investigate how to teach and assess foundational math concepts and how to apply this knowledge using instructional and management strategies appropriate to learners in the primary years. Prerequisite: EDU 200 .
