This course examines the dynamic interplay between visual culture and societal transformation in the 19th century, a period defined by profound changes across cultures, including industrialization, colonialism, and significant shifts to the art world itself. Taking a global perspective, students will explore key movements and influential artists from regions such as Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas through a combination of lectures, discussions, and critical readings. The course will emphasize transnational connections, encouraging students to consider the global dimensions of 19th-century art and the interrelationships among different artistic traditions through the critical study of sources, both primary and secondary, and collaborative projects.
