HUM 319 Medicine and Literature

Fall and Spring

This course explores, through classic and contemporary texts, the relationship between medicine and literature. In this course, we explore how medicine is portrayed in literary works, how literature reflects upon and offers insight into issues of health and illness, mind and body, the roles and relationships between medical practitioners and patients, and the broader social significance of medicine in literature. While most of the course is focused on Western medicine and literature, non‐Western understandings of both are also covered. Prerequisite: FCO 210 FCO 215 , or FCO 225 .
