HIS 306 History of Race and Gender in American Sports

This course explores the history of sports in the United States through three distinct and often overlapping lenses: racial identity, gender norms, and American ideals. The course will interrogate the definitions of racial identity and gender norms in American culture and will examine how people used sports to contest racial and gender boundaries. It will also probe how sports served to challenge, or uphold, stereotypes regarding race and gender. Examining American sports history from the early 19th century to the present day will enable students to critically interrogate the world of sports and their changing meanings over time.
