Film and Media Arts, B.A. Learning Outcomes


Program Educational Outcomes

The mission of the Film and Media Arts major will be to provide students with a foundation in filmmaking practice through training in screenwriting, video production, audio production, and nonlinear editing, while also broadening their knowledge of film history and developing their analytical, research, and communicative abilities through the academic study of film. Students will also learn specialized skills related to film and media arts through the study of fields such as acting, directing, set design, photography, computer graphics, and musical scoring. In terms of learning outcomes, graduates of the program will demonstrate:

  • The ability to view movies analytically and a grasp of the major critical and theoretical approaches used in the study of film.
  • A familiarity with the broad history of film in the United States and around the world, as well as specific genres, directors, periods, and national cinemas important to film history.
  • The ability to clearly and persuasively communicate ideas and arguments about film in writing that is supported by research and textual evidence.
  • A command of the foundational skills of filmmaking, including screenwriting, video production, audio production, and nonlinear editing.
  • Specialized knowledge of one or more fields related to film and media arts, including acting, directing, set design, photography, computer graphics, and musical scoring.
  • The ability to develop original film and media project from concept to completion, both independently and in creative collaboration with others.
