Entrepreneurship, B.S.

The Entrepreneurship major provides students with a comprehensive program that prepares them for a variety of entrepreneurial skill paths.   In most cases, students will start their own business or work for a company where these start-up skills are valued.  Others are preparing to enter the family business.  This program is designed to give these students the skills to assume major roles in the family business.  Major companies have come to realize the value of entrepreneurship skills and training.  According to the Small Business Administration (SBA), small businesses provide approximately 75% of the net new jobs in our nation’s economy, represent 99.7% of all employers, and employ over 50% of the private workforce.  Students gain critical knowledge and the skills necessary to become successful entrepreneurs through an educational process that allows direct interaction with experienced entrepreneurs, internships and a faculty with both academic preparation and first-hand knowledge of running an entrepreneurial enterprise.  The program’s nine specialty courses were designed to provide students with the necessary tools for entrepreneurial success.  Students will develop business acumen in such areas as effective business communication, creative problem-solving techniques, critical thinking, business consulting, and understanding and developing financial statements.

Requirements for Graduation:

To be eligible for graduation, students majoring in Entrepreneurship must complete a minimum of 120 credits, achieve a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher, and complete the General Education Requirements of the College. A minimum grade of 2.0 is required for First Year Seminar and all courses taken as part of Foundations. Courses used to complete General Education Requirements may not be taken on a pass/fail basis.

The General Education Requirements of the college require students to successfully complete First Year Seminar, Foundations, Disciplinary Perspectives, and a Constellation. Students who enter the college with 30 credit hours completed will not take a First Year Seminar course and therefore must take an additional 3 credits for graduation. Transfer students that are awarded 60 or more credits upon acceptance to York College will not be required to complete a Constellation.

Students majoring in Entrepreneurship must maintain a 2.0 average in the General Business Component courses and a 2.0 average in the Entrepreneurship Component courses. In addition, students must attain a 2.0 or higher in each course that serves as a prerequisite to a subsequent Business course. (Refer to the course description for specific prerequisites.) Failure to attain a 2.0 in prerequisite courses may lengthen the time to graduation. Students must also earn a grade of 2.0 or higher in the senior capstone courses, BUS 494  and ENT 495 . Students graduating with a declared major in Entrepreneurship may not simultaneously declare a minor in Entrepreneurship. Students who are waived from FYS must complete 3 credits of non-business coursework.
